What is Mangosteen?

Mangosteen Fruit

Named after the French priest and explorer Laurentiers Garcin (1673-1751), mangosteen, or Garcinia mangostana (scientific name), is a dark purple colored fruit which grows only in ultra-tropical climates such as in Thailand, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It was Queen Victoria's favorite fruit and is still called, “the queen of fruits”! In the French Caribbean it is called “the food of the gods". This small dark, tangerine sized fruit has a segmented pulp which resembles the texture of a pomegranate. Until recently, it has been one of nature’s best-kept secrets!

The Mangosteen Tree

Mangosteen Tree The mangosteen has short, thick and leathery leaves and even though it is one of the slowest growing of the tropical fruit trees, it can grow to 80 feet in height. It can take from 7 to 10 years to yield its first fruit which is then harvested twice per year. It may continue to produce for up to 100 years. The tree is in the same plant family as two other botanicals, Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s wort) and Garcinia cambogia, both of which are recognized herbal supplements.

Benefits of Mangosteen

In China, Thailand, and India, the fruit is used as anti-parasitic and antimicrobial treatments for dysentery and diarrhea. The plant’s astringent qualities are also useful in preventing dehydration during illness. In Thailand, people utilize its antimicrobial properties to treat infected wounds, malaria, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, and gonorrhea.

Dr. J. Frederic Templeman, explains in his report "The Mangosteen X-Factor" that a challenge facing the medical community today is that of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Research done in Thailand shows that powerful nutrients in the fruit called xanthones, have been shown to inhibit the reproduction of certain bacteria.

For the people of Asia, its powerful anti-inflammatory properties have proven effective in treating eczema, hyperkeratosis and related skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrhea.

In chronic form, inflammation has now been casually linked to cancer and Neurodegenerative diseases of the brain (such as Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's) Heart Disease, Stroke, Diabetes, Obesity and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's). Excerpt taken from “The Mangosteen X-Factor” brochure by J.Frederick Tempelman, M.D.

The people of the Caribbean, drink this exotic fruit in a tea, known as “eau de Creole,” as a tonic for fatigue and low energy symptoms. Brazilians use a similar tea as a de-worming agent and digestive aid. In Venezuela, parasitic skin infections are treated with rind poultices, while Filipinos employ the fruit to control fever.

What's unique is that the mangosteen health benefits have only previously been enjoyed in Asia and South America, with few people in North America or Europe enjoying its benefits. This is probably because it has not been readily available except to those living in warm climates. Now, mangosteen juice is available for people to enjoy all around the world.

Mangosteen Research

This highly nutritious fruit has been studied for nearly 150 years, resulting in over 100 studies published in scientific journals.Phyto (plant based)nutrients that are found in the mangosteen include:

  • Xanthones
  • Catechins
  • Proanthocyanidins

You have probably heard of vitamins and anti-oxidants. You may not have heard of xanthones. In short, mangosteen xanthones are biologically active compounds that possess a number of bioactive capabilities—such as antioxidant and anti-inflamatory properties. According to research, over 200 xanthones exist in nature and over 40 different xanthones have been identified in the fruit. You may have heard of Catechins and Proanthoxyanidins in green tea or grape seed extract. These nutrients are in the Garcinia mangostana as well.

Xanthones have also been shown to contain powerful antioxidants, compounds that inhibit oxidative damage in the body. There are scientific reports that show we are exposed to millions of free radicals each day from sources such as second-hand smoke, pollution and tainted food. We all need to supplement our diets. with extra antioxidants to combat these modern-day free radicals

Free radicals seek out electrons in order to become atomically balanced and attack your body's cells, stealing electrons from any substance with which they come in contact. This damage called oxidation, occurs in your body and on your skin and is irreversible and can speed up the aging process by years.

Antioxidants are highly regarded for their ability to protect the body from the deteriorating effects of free radicals. They preempt free-radical damage by donating the needed electron and mop up the free radicals preventing further damage.

Most phytonutrients complement one another, so their benefits can include antioxidant effects and immune system stimulation. In short, specific phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables work together with other nutrients to protect your health. These protective plant compounds are an emerging area of health and nutrition, with exciting implications for mangosteen nutrition which is now being provided as a new

Whole Food Supplement.

Natural Anti-Aging Skin Care

The antioxidant properties of xanthones are now available as a non toxic anti-aging skin care. As I am getting a little older now, I am becoming concerned that the pores on my face are becoming more pronounced and some definite lines are beginning to show. I have used the juice topically on my face occasionally, especially when I have any kind of break out in my skin. Sometimes I even put some dried juice powder in my skin care cream.

So when I heard about mangosteen skin care, I was very excited! I was even more excited to find out that these mangosteen skin care products are completely nontoxic and green. These skin care formulations are also intuitive, which means that they can address your individual skin care needs. The real secret comes from BioActive X3 Complex, a patent pending blend of three exclusive xanthone complexes derived from the mangosteen.

I work as a dental assistant and my hands get really dry from wearing latex gloves and washing my hands all day, so I have been using this skin care on my hands. It is helping to keep my skin moisturized longer and it is beginning to fade some age spots that were developing. Of course I have been using it on my face and neck as well.

My skin is staying softer and the skin tone is firmer. The pores and fine lines are already greatly diminished, which is very exciting. Its for men too! Some that I know, are using the cleansing gel as a nontoxic shave gel and then using the toner as an aftershave, following up with the skin moisturizer lotion.
