Why Organic Skin Care?

Why do people buy organic skin care products? For the same reason they buy organic food products - to avoid toxic exposure to toxic chemicals! In fact, science indicates that we may actually absorb more toxins through our skin, than from any foods we eat!

You have heard it said, "You are what you eat"...well it may also be true that you are what you put on your skin! Medical research reveals that what you put on your skin absorbs into your blood stream.

Why Consumers Are Willing To Pay More!

Recent consumer research indicates that shoppers are willing to pay more for top rated organic personal care products such as organic soap, organic facial cleanser, organic face cream and organic body lotion, because they want to use safe skin care products. It is a fact that many over the counter skin care products such as skin cleansers, lotions and moisturizers contain a variety of untested toxic ingredients which are clearly linked to poor health and disease.

The Environmental Working Group recently released a study revealing these startling facts about many personal care products on the market today:

  • Only 11% of the 10,500 chemicals found in personal care products have been screened for safety.
  • 33% contain ingredients linked to cancer
  • 45% contain ingredients that may be harmful to the reproductive system or to a baby's development. br>
  • 60% have ingredients that disrupt hormones.

You may want to check your current skin care products against this harmful ingredients list.

But...Are All Natural or Organic Skin Care Products Really Safe?

You might expect a product label that says "natural" or "organic" to be, well … natural or organic. This is often not the case! With no government regulation of the use of the words “organic” or "natural" in personal care product labeling, companies will often list a few botanical ingredients on their labels to entice consumers, hoping they won’t notice the list of synthetic petrochemical and oleochemical emollients, thickeners, detergents, fragrances and preservatives.

This March '08 article published by the Organic Consumers Association, reports that a synthetic chemical carcinogen called 1,4-dioxane, is being found in many popular “organic” or “natural” labeled products.

1,4-dioxane is generated through a process called ethoxylation, in which ethylene oxide, is added to other chemicals to make them less harsh. This process creates the by-product 1,4-dioxane.

Even many top-selling product brands in the natural personal products sector were found to contain this dangerous 1,4-dioxane contaminant!
